During my travels through the lush countryside of Bali, I discovered a fascinating side of coffee that few get to see: the traditional process of preparing raw coffee beans before they become the rich brew we all love.

The Journey of Coffee Begins with the Bean

In the photo above, you can see raw coffee beans carefully laid out in a bamboo tray known locally as a “tampah.” These unroasted beans, often called green coffee beans, are the result of meticulous harvesting, washing, and drying.

The farmers in Bali use age-old techniques passed down through generations. After the coffee cherries are handpicked, the beans are separated and sun-dried in these bamboo trays. This method is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and preserves the natural flavor of the coffee.

The Role of Tradition in Coffee Quality

Unlike modern industrial processing, traditional coffee processing allows for more control over quality. Farmers can visually inspect each bean, removing any defects manually. This hands-on approach ensures only the best beans make it to the roasting phase.

Petani Bali menggunakan teknik turun-temurun. Setelah dipetik tangan, biji kopi dipisahkan dan dijemur di bawah sinar matahari dalam tampah bambu. Cara ini ramah lingkungan, hemat biaya, dan menjaga cita rasa alami kopi.
